Linguaphone Arabic Review
By Gerrit du Plessis
Linguaphone the creators of Linguaphone Arabic is a well-established
company with a long track record of producing excellent language instruction materials. Their
method is thorough, covering grammar and syntax in addition to the expected conversational
dialogues. They promise to help you learn Arabic by teaching you over 2000 Arabic words, and
they're serious about this; the lessons move along at a fairly rapid clip, and you're certainly
unlikely to find them boring. On the other hand, for complete beginners with little or no
background in Arabic, Linguaphone may move along a bit TOO fast, and their native speakers are
occasionally difficult to understand.
On the plus side, their beautifully-designed workbooks, textbooks, and auxiliary printed
materials will delight any visual learner, and the complete transcripts of the CDs really do
help keep the learner focused. But even these features don't make up for the lack of
interactive learning experiences and a person-to-person support system, which help most people
learn Arabic more successfully. In the end, even though Linguaphone promises to take students
from the level of rank beginner to complete fluency, their lack of an interactive component,
the excessive speed with which the material is taught and the relative difficulty of the
lessons make this process a challenge. For this reason, I've awarded Linguaphone with a 57%
rating.

P.S. If you want to use a proven online Arabic course that's much less
expensive than Linguaphone Arabic and provides you with interactive learning resources, then I
recommend you have a look at Rocket Arabic. They also
offer a free 6-day trial, so it's a great way to check it out for yourself.
