Fluenz Mandarin review

While you technically can't learn Chinese online with Fluenz Mandarin because it has no download option or online components, it IS a terrific program. The Fluenz company has spent a lot of time and done a lot of strategic planning to develop a marvelous line of instructional materials. Because every language is unique, their teaching approach is unique to that language as well. In other words, Fluenz recognizes that you are not a child learning your first language. You expect the language you're learning to behave like the language you know, and if it doesn't, you're confused.

Consequently, Fluenz explains. And explains, and explains. The explanations are in English, of course, because early on in your language study you'd be in real trouble if the explanations were in Chinese. But sometimes it feels as if you're listening to a lecture ABOUT Mandarin rather than practicing Mandarin itself.

Because the Fluenz people are so intent on making sure you understand they way Mandarin works that they miss the obvious: if you need to learn Chinese online because you're going to a country where that language is spoken, then fairly soon you'll need to know how to say "How much does that cost?" "What time is it?" "Taxi!" - and understand anything that is said to you in reply. Bottom line - if you have a great deal of time to learn Mandarin thoroughly and well, Fluenz will do the trick. If you don't have very much time at all, don't even consider this course. Since I consider the time factor to be a serious drawback, I've given Fluenz Mandarin second place in my survey.
