Watch Hindi Movies (no subtitles, please)!

No matter where you live, there's an easy way to hear Hindi spoken in the comfort of your own home -- Hindi movies! You can order these through services such as Netflix, and Amazon.com, or download them from the Internet. You may want to begin with movies whose plots you basically already know – for example, Aladin or Harry Potter. You can also get American movies and TV shows dubbed in Hindi, like A Few Good Men, Alexander and Transformers.

Make sure that, if there are English subtitles, they can be turned off; seeing the words in English defeats the challenge of following the story in Hindi. You may also be able to acquire episodes of Hindi television series, which will give you a more contemporary and streetwise Hindi than you'd get from your formal lessons.

You'll gradually find yourself becoming more and more comfortable listening to Hindi, and you'll be amazed at how quickly your auditory comprehension grows!

Don't worry about learning Hindi slang – its day will come.

As you become exposed to more and more Hindi, either through personal contacts with native Hindi speakers or through Hindi movies and television, you will realize that Hindi speakers use slang, just as English speakers do. And just like our slang, Hindi slang is tied to particular populations, particular regions, or particular eras in history. There really isn't any need for you to try to master slang at this stage of the game. In fact, too much slang – or the wrong slang -- can be counterproductive. You don't want to go into a business meeting or academic interview sounding like a thug, do you? For now, stick to the polite Hindi supplied by your language instruction materials. Eventually, when you are comfortable enough in your Hindi skin to use some slang, you'll know what kind of slang to use.
