Unforgettable Japanese review
By Gerrit du Plessis
Unforgettable Japanese just sounded so intriguing I had to check out its free
demo. Essentially, in Unforgettable Japanese, the student learns vocabulary words by free
association. Sakana is the Japanese word for fish, so in order to remember it, simply think of
putting a sack on a fish. (Sack - on - a - get it?)
Most students have tried to cram for exams this way at some time or another, and it does work -
if you don't have to remember too many examples at once. Unfortunately, when you're trying to speak
a foreign language, you need to have virtually instant recall, and this kind of free-association
imagery becomes slow and frustrating. (Was that a bag on a fish or a sack on a fish?) In trying to
learn a mere six words this way, I missed one because I couldn't remember whether I was trying to
describe the shirt as white or sheer. And even though the audio component says the Japanese word
aloud, the student wouldn't be likely to remember the nuances of pronunciation because he's too
worried about decoding his imagery. This is, frankly, not a good way to learn Japanese fast, or at
all, and that's why it earned last place in my evaluation.
The Cons: Unforgettable Japanese is not as well-known as the other two courses,
so it's difficult to get user feedback about it. This course might help you remember new Japanese
words fast, but we don't think it will teach you to speak Japanese any faster than any other course
would.
