How to Stay Motivated
While You Learn Korean?
When you first begin to learn Korean, the whole process is exciting, and you're confident that you'll be able to
master this language in no time flat. But it doesn't take long for it to feel like a chore. Perhaps you haven't
learned to speak fluent Korean overnight as you expected you would; the lessons and studying seem like they're
cutting into your leisure time. All in all, you've lost your motivation. Never fear! Here are some simple tricks
you can use to keep your interest level high and motivate you toward mastering Korean.
Visualize yourself speaking Korean.
This sounds really silly, but it works! Before each study session, close your
eyes for a moment and picture yourself conversing in Korean. If you're
learning Korean in order to take a trip, picture yourself in Seoul, effortlessly
ordering from a menu or chatting with people on the street.
If you're learning Korean for business, picture yourself in a high-level
business meeting with superiors who are fascinated by every word you say.
Invest a lot of creativity in this picture, taking note of the clothing of your
new acquaintances and the setting of your fantasy. Emphasize how easily
the conversation flows and how your mastery of Korean enables you to get
precisely what you want.
Choose the best time and place for you to study.
For some reason, it's commonly believed that people are at their mental
peak first thing in the morning, and their brains are less receptive at night.
This is undoubtedly true – for morning people. Some of us, on the other
hand, are night people; we drag ourselves through the first hours of the
day, gradually building up energy that propels us into the wee hours of the
night. Other people may fall somewhere between the two extremes. Some
people study right after they get home from work; others need a break
before they crack the books.
The point is – you know when your mind is most alert and receptive. It
doesn't matter what works for other people; study when it's best for you,
and give up trying to study at times when you're just not wired to do it.
