Pimsleur Spanish review
By Gerrit du Plessis
Pimsleur Spanish uses the total audio immersion method, this involves using Spanish to
teach Spanish, the way your parents used English to teach you to speak. It sounds like this would
be the ideal way to learn any language - and yet the truth is, we don't learn the way we did as
toddlers. For instance, I know that as a small child I easily memorized adult song lyrics and
regularly added four- and five-syllable words into my working vocabulary. Today, I can't remember
new words I hear unless I immediately write them down, although I can easily remember new words I
read.
Pimsleur Spanish doesn't use any reading or writing in the early to intermediate phases
of their program, and this is a deal-breaker for visual learners like me - I'd never learn Spanish
online without something to read! The Pimsleur method also doesn't involve any activity except
listening and responding to native Spanish speakers, and that's not going to work for kinesthetic
learners either. On the positive side, there's no better program for students trying to achieve a
near-perfect accent. But Pimsleur Digital Spanish is maddeningly repetitive and extremely
overpriced. For this reason I've rate it at 76%.
