Where to learn Spanish?
Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, second only to Mandarin Chinese, with 400
million native speakers. It's no surprise, then, that it is increasingly seen by British people as one of the most
useful and important languages to learn. Any language with a high number of native speakers is likely to offer many
opportunities for different types of learning. You could choose to learn Spanish at FE college evening classes or a
course at a specialist language school, in a Spanish speaking country, or teach yourself at home. If you can, then
it's generally better to take a course, whether that is at home or abroad. Teaching yourself can be effective, but
you need strong motivation and good study skills. If you haven't studied for a long time, or you feel you might
struggle to prioritise learning among all the other demands of life, then look for a course.
There are many benefits to studying Spanish abroad, and as Spanish is spoken in many countries, many places to
do it. Spain itself is obviously the nearest and easiest option, and has many beautiful cities which would make an
ideal backdrop for language learning. Spanish is also spoken in most of South and Central America, so you could
choose to learn Argentina, Mexico or Belize! Learning abroad is a great way to have an adventure while you learn, but
most importantly, it allows immersion in Spanish that you just cannot achieve at home which will speed progress.
It also helps you grasp colloquial language and speech patterns, first hand.
However, learning abroad is not always an option. It can be very expensive, requiring time off work and time
away from family commitments. It's important to be able to fit language learning around your everyday life for many
people. Fortunately, Spanish courses are widely available. London in particular has many good language schools. As
am example, for Spanish lessons Wimbledon has St Georges International London, one of many well regarded schools in the capital.
The local council, Merton, also provides classes through its adult education service. Ideally, you should look
at a few different course providers and choose whichever seems to be the best fit for your needs.
